BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS LAGOS BRANCH
GENERAL BACKGROUND
The Nigerian Society of Engineers was established in 1958 to provide a central organization for Engineers in Nigeria, to engage in activities that could be necessary to maintain a strict standard of professional ethics amongst its members, and to advance the interest of the engineering profession in Nigeria. In the discharge of its functions, the society is expected to collaborate with industry, commerce and academia and other such national bodies as may be necessary and to present to the government of Nigeria, the views of the Society on subjects of concern or interest of Engineers in Nigeria. The Society has tremendous progress since its establishment. The Lagos branch is one of the most pronounced and successful of all in Society’s branches. It is the pleasure of the current executives to describe that success and more importantly consolidate it.
THE BIRTH OF LAGOS BRANCH
The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Lagos branch began to be distinguished from the activities of the central executive in 1971. It started operating from NEPA (formerly ECN) offices at Ijora, courtesy of Engr. E.H Yonren, a General Manager. Eventually, activities of the branch were moved to the University of Lagos, in a bid to situate the Branch in a more central and accessible location for the engineers in Lagos metropolis. The University authorities, as a conscious demonstration of their corporate commitment to the growth of the Branch, gave a two-room office in the Faculty of Engineering to NSE-LB as its temporary secretariat.
This remained the case until 2005, when the branch executive committee, under the leadership of Engr. A. Oyedepo, FNSE applied for the allocation of a separate piece of land in the University of Lagos. The then V.C, Prof. OyewusiIbidapoObe gave the request an instant approval. The permanent secretariat was named after the first chairman of the branch, Engr. (Ven.) Bolude Philips Oyebolu, FNSE, PPNSE. The site was cleared, consultants were chosen, designs were made and the event of the ‘Turning of the First Sod’ was conducted on March 2, 2007 at the Works and Physical Planning Yard of the University, where the land is situated.
The building will be officially known as ‘Oyebolu Engineering Resource Centre (OYERC).’ Close observation of the brief will reveal that the intended permanent secretariat will be more or less another “Engineering Centre” as well as an extension of the faculty of Engineering of the University of Lagos. Facilities will include equipped E-library, conference hall, chairman’s office, chairman’s secretary office, Vice chairman’s office, Board Room, Secretary’s office, the General office and Gallery.
